Be it resolved that USC is the best college football team in the land...

It is nice to know that Congress is finally looking into something that needs oversight by the federal government: the Bowl Championship Series. Since Div. I-A cannot settle who's best on the field, the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee will soon hold hearings to come to the bottom of why the flawed system never seems to come up with the right match-up for the so-called national championship game.

First let me say that I feel that a legislative body stepping in to force the way a champion is chosen is wrong. It is clearly the media's job to select the winner as the Associated Press, et al., have done since 1936.

However, if Congress wants to pick the winner, then let them just pick the winner with the Congressional legislation. "Excuse me, Mr. Delay, I would like to support your bill to declare the University of Texas champions, and perhaps if you would support my flat tax proposal I could be persuaded to go that way."

But of course the Senate would pass the bill declaring USC the champs, and so the conference committee would work things out a compromise and bring cheer to the hearts of the victims of Hurricane Katrina and declare LSU champions.

And everything would be fine until March, when the selection of Notre Dame as the fourth best team in the land is challenged in federal court as being an unlawful federal endorsement of religion. The Supreme Court should tell us who wins the 2005 national championship during the 2007-2008 term.
